MEMPHIS READS QUESTION

We all go to the movies for various reasons- to see the show, to compare and contrast the book versus the motion picture, or even to enjoy the refreshments while escaping the elements.

So, Memphis Reads wants to know:

When you saw a movie based on a book, did you enjoy the book or movie better? Why do you think this was the case?

THE MEMPHIS READS QUESTION: July 2012

by Andrea

Nancy Pearl, well-known author, book critic, and NPR host, states “when we open a book, read the first few pages, and choose to go on, we enter the world of that book” through one of four doorways: character, language, setting, or story. (Source)

Memphis Reads asks:
When YOU read a book, which of the four doorways appeals to you the most? Do well-developed characters appeal to you?  The eloquent language? Do you visualize a descriptive setting? Or lastly, do you dive into an intriguing story line?

My favorite and most comfortable place to read is in my king-sized bed with only the lamp on as my husband, Neale, and cat, Mully, are sleeping beside me. I enjoy this because I am with my family, participating in one of my favorite activities. Now that I shared my favorite place to read, Memphis Reads wants to know yours.

THE MEMPHIS READS QUESTION: April 2012

by Andrea

We all know settings are just as crucial to a good book as much as the plot or characters need to be. Settings can inspire, intrigue, or even relax readers.

Memphis Reads wants know: Have you read about any place, in a fiction or nonfiction book, where you wanted to pack your bags and visit?

THE MEMPHIS READS QUESTION: MARCH 2012

by Andrea King

Lots of books are adapted into movies. Sometimes this is a great thing; other times, not so much. As an avid reader, I often watch the film adaptation of a book to see if the characters are what I imagined them to look like. Most of the time, the film industry does not let me down. But there are times I cannot believe the industry and I read the same story.

Memphis Reads wants to know: Are there any books that have been made into films where the characters look exactly the way you imagined? What about characters that are completely opposite of what was in your imagination?

You have all month to respond to this question. Simply click the comment link below.

Many families will end the Christmas holiday weekend with a trip to the movies, and some of the most successful films this year were based on best-selling novels. Movies adapted from book series did quite well (think Harry Potter and Twilight) and readers can look forward to more this month, like the upcoming release of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (based on Stieg Larsson's book), The Descendants, (based on a novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings), and more.
Memphis Reads wants to know:
What was your favorite book-to-movie of 2011?
