"Memphis Public Libraries have given their 30-year-old Summer Reading Program a facelift! The new and improved EXPLORE MEMPHIS is set to begin Monday, June 2, 2014 at each Memphis Public Library location. An expanded version of the traditional program, EXPLORE MEMPHIS will offer Library customers of all ages a chance to explore their interests, while exploring the Bluff City with free trips to several local attractions!"

Help support library collections, programming, and funding at our annual Friends of the Library 2013 Fall Book Sale

The book sale takes place Friday* and Saturday, October 25-26, 2013 at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (*Friday is the Friends members only preview sale.) 

“Our regular customers wait months to stock up at the Friends of the Library book sale,” said Friends member and volunteer Cynthia Hawes. 

“This year’s categories will include signed books, John Grisham, Christmas material, coffee table books, Judaica, and large print books to name a few,” added Herman Markell, another Friends member and volunteer.

[Library Events & Programs] "America's Music" Documentary Series

The Memphis Public Library is one of 50 libraries/organizations in the country, and one of the two recipients in the state of Tennessee that will present a six-part documentary series, America's Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music From Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway. Library's America's Music Webpage

Each of these six program sessions will feature a documentary screening, a scholar-led discussion, and free live performances of 20th century American popular music. 

Dr. Jack T. Cooper, Associate Professor and Director of Jazz Studies and Studio Music at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music of the University of Memphis will lead each discussion.

This year for Adult Summer Reading, we invite all Memphis area book clubs to participate and compete for the Memphis Public Library's branches and system-wide Book Club of the Year Contest. You love reading, and we want you to help share your passion with friends and family and get recognized for your efforts!

[Library Events and Programs] Get Ready for Adult Summer Reading 2013!

Read. Get Informed. Get Entertained. Get Incentivized. 
Adult Summer Reading 2013 begins June 1, 2013. 
This year's theme is Groundbreaking Reads.

The rules are simple. Fill out an entry form at any library location or online every time you read or listen to a newspaper, magazine, book, or ebook. 

We want local book clubs to be winners too, so this year we are breaking ground with the first Book Club of the Year contest.
