THE MEMPHIS READS QUESTION: September 2012

by Andrea

Now that summer is drawing to a close, marked by end of the Labor Day weekend, MEMPHIS READS wants to know:

Which book(s) did you take on vacation?

We don't care if the books were pure fluff or ones of substantial academic merit because there is no judgment from MEMPHIS READS.

And, as always, thank you for sharing.

I usually take good, old-fashioned fluffy chick-lit when I go on vacation, especially when it is hot outside.

This summer I read quite a few graphic novels. I started off with Maus I and II, then I read Watchmen. My brain craved more graphic novels so I picked up Lions of Baghdad. I couldn't find an available copy of the novel A Game of Thrones so I read the first volume of the graphic novel.

I took the Iliad and the Odyssey with me on vacation with the goal of finishing both. I made it about 30 pages into the Iliad before putting them both back in my suitcase and watching tv the rest of the week. It's not quite as educational, but at least I now know what people are talking about when they mention Honey Boo Boo.

I read a Perry Mason mystery, Erik Larson's In the Garden of Beasts and Glenn C. Altschuler's All Shook Up: How Rock 'N' Roll Changed America.

I've been reading "The Warmth of Other Suns" all summer. And enjoying every page of it!

I've been reading Frank the Voice by James Kaplan. This is not a book I would have normally chosen, but it's the next book selection for the Frayser Book Club. Interestingly enough...I'm actually liking this book. Frank Sinatra was a character!

I enjoy chick-lit probably the most when I go on vacation. I have several battered and bruised paperbacks of my own (not library books!) I pack each time I travel but I don't always get to read them!
