[Book Review] BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY by Ruta Sepetys

Fiction/Historical

Beth reviews BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY by Ruta Sepetys (Philomel Books, 2011).

We all know of Anne Frank, but what about others deported from their homes in the worst of times and forced to live in deplorable conditions?

Between Shades of Gray takes us on Lina's journey before, during and after Stalin's deportation of Lithuanians. Lina lives through the worst mankind has to offer and also amazing kindness from unexpected places. The author, Ruta Sepetys, based the book on interviews from actual survivors. This makes the book all the much harder to read and all the much more a necessity to read it.
