In 2010, Bill Simmons, also known as ESPN’s “Sports Guy”, completed a 752-page tour de force on the National Basketball Association. The Book of Basketball: The NBA According to The Sports Guy is a must-read for both established NBA fans and newcomers, alike. Although the length is daunting, sports lovers will be rewarded by Mr. Simmons’s subjective ranking of all-time players and abridged narrative on the history of the National Basketball Association.
Mr. Simmons weaves evidence in support of his arguments into a framework of personal anecdote. I also applaud his extensive use of footnoting--mostly in a comical fashion. If it achieves nothing else, the book provides great fodder for debate and a starting point for new fans of NBA Basketball.
